授業の目的、または到達目標 To explore the intersections betweeh human rights and the environment through an examination of the life of one Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
Learning goals:
* can explain the connections between the environment and peace
* can determine how human rights, the environment, science, religion, and peace (the core topics in the OJU curriculum) are connected
* can connect the issues discussed to their lives in Japan
授業の概要 Students will read, discuss, and report on the work of Wangari Maathai of Kenya. Students will learn from a real-life example of an African woman who is active in helping the environment while helping people heal themselves. Ms. Maathai introduces her culture, her activities, lessons from the Bible, and values from other cultures including the Japanese idea of mottainai. Besides the textbook, students will research related topics in the library or on the Web.

準備学習 About two hours a week, study and prepare to discuss the textbook and related sources. Prepare presentations and papers with citations and References in APA style.

成績評価方法・基準 Class work (Quizzes on the textbook, class participation, out-of-class preparation, discussions and reporting in English): 40%. Research Presentation: 20%. Summary of Research Presentation & References: 10%. Reflection & Response Papers (3x10): 30%. (Repeaters of Topic Studies II follow the Fall semester requirements and write a paper of at least three pages in three stages). There are penalties for any late papers. If satisfactory papers are not submitted, the student cannot pass the course.
