授業の目的、または到達目標 To explore the nature of bilingualism in Japan and worldwide, including issues of child-raising, bilingual education, government policies, and language minorities.
授業の概要 Research and report about bilingualism in Japan and the world. Bilingualism includes the individual level, such as your own bilingual and bicultural development; the family level, such as bilingual child-raising; the level of society, such as language minorities and government policies; bilingual education, such as international schools; and human rights, such as rights to choose languages for children's education or your own cultural identity.

  • Hand out the detailed syllabus. Introduction to class objectives, contents, assignments, evaluation, and class Websites. We focus on Bilingualism in the first half of the semester and Bilingual Education in the second half. Lecture and discussion on the individual level of bilingualism. Becoming bilingual and bicultural gives you greater choices and therefore more freedom.
  • Study the detailed syllabus, Class Links, and handout or suggested reading.

  • Family bilingualism and bilingual child-raising. Example of the Jenkins-Soga family. How to write Reflection & Response Papers with References in APA format. Citing sources in English and Japanese. Plan the first Reflection & Response Paper, on a topic in Bilingualism that is different from other students, due in class #7.
  • Study and prepare to discuss the handout or suggested reading. Research a book chapter or article for your first Reflection & Response Paper.

  • Handout, lecture and discussion on Concepts in Bilingualism and Bilingual Education. Discuss handouts or recommended readings and report to the class in your own words.
  • Complete your first Reflection & Response Paper.

  • Submit your first Reflection & Response Paper after presenting and discussing it in groups. Lecture and discussion on bilingualism issues in Japan, such as language minorities, English in elementary schools, international marriage, returnees and biculturalism.
  • Study and prepare to discuss the handout or suggested reading. Research a book chapter or article for your second Reflection & Response Paper on another kind of Bilingualism, due in class #13.

  • Plan second Reflection & Response Paper on another case of Bilingualism, due in class #13. More on Bilingualism issues in Japan. Discuss handouts or recommended readings and report to the class.
  • Study and prepare to discuss the handout or suggested reading.

  • Research on Bilingualism around the world. Connections with politics and human rights. Discuss handouts or recommended readings and report to the class.
  • Complete your second Reflection & Response Paper on Bilingualism.

  • Submit your second Reflection & Response Paper after presenting and discussing it in groups. Survey on bilingualism: to what extent are you and others in Japan bilingual and bicultural?
  • Study and prepare to discuss the handout or suggested reading.

  • Start Bilingual Education. Lecture and discussion on Bilingual Education issues in Japan. Plan the third Reflection & Response Paper on a type of Bilingual Education somewhere in the world, due in class #19. Discuss handouts or recommended readings and report to the class.

  • Bilingual Education research and issues around the world. Discuss handouts or recommended readings and report to the class.
  • Complete your third Reflection & Response Paper on Bilingual Education.

  • Submit your third Reflection & Response Paper after presenting and discussing it in groups. Plan Group Research Presentations on Bilingual Education: choose a bilingual or international school as your group research topic.
  • Study and prepare to discuss the handout or suggested reading. See the class blog post for links to bilingual and international schools in Japan.

準備学習 About two hours a week, study the textbook, library sources and online sites, then prepare papers and presentations. Submit 4 papers of at least 1 page plus References.
参考文献 See the Bilingual Education reference section in the Library and class links (blog address below).
成績評価方法・基準 Class work (class participation, out-of-class preparation, discussions and reporting in English): 40%; Group Research Presentation: 20%; Summary of Research Presentation & References: 10%; Reflection & Response Papers (3x10%): 30%. There are penalties for late papers. If the Summary and Response Papers are not submitted by the end of the make-up exam period, the student cannot pass the course.
