担当教員 McCarty, Steve A.
授業の目的、または到達目標 In this course, students learn what bilingual education is. They will also learn the types of bilingual education. In order to examine bilingual education in various contexts, students need to understand bilingualism first.
授業の概要 With the increase of foreign workers in Japan, the number of children in Japanese schools whose first language is not Japanese is increasing. With an increase in the number of Japanese going on overseas postings, the number of Japanese children growing up abroad is also increasing. This course examines how children can be raised to be bilingual, and the choices you have to become bilingual and bicultural.

準備学習 Reading & Response Papers: Students will be asked to read about 20-30 pages in English per week (textbook and print handouts). Students will submit a two-page response paper (500 word limit, APA format) based on the assigned readings three times during the semester. The papers are designed to promote preparation for class and critical thinking about the material, and will serve as the basis for small group discussion.

Final Paper: The final paper is meant to provide students with the opportunity to examine, in more depth, one of the issues related to bilingualism and bilingual education. Particular topics may be selected from class discussions or comparing and contrasting different models of instruction for bilingual learners. The final paper should be 8-10 pages and follow APA format.
