授業の目的、または到達目標 To improve presentation skills and to develop the ability to conduct and participate in discussions of contemporary issues in business, communication, and public policy and development (collaboration).
Learning goals:

授業の概要 This course will focus on developing professional communication skills. This will include presenting information, speaking impromptu, explaining difficult subject matter, and persuading people on a contemporary issue. More specifically, the course will focus on (a) improving presentation delivery, structure, and visual aids, (b) enhancing the ability to form relevant questions and respond actively in discussions, (c) developing the skills and expressions needed for professional presentations, and (d) analyzing strengths and weaknesses. Topics include the basics of oral presentation, content, organization, and delivery; selection of appropriate register; use of voice and nonverbal communication; and delivery of presentations within an academic focus (business, communication, collaboration).

授業の形態 This course will include a balance of short lectures, readings, discussions, and presentations about contemporary topics in business, communication, and public policy and development.

準備学習 Students will conduct research, and plan for and practice presentations. Expect to spend 2+ hours on preparation for every hour of class time.

成績評価方法・基準 Presentation portfolio 60% (4 presentations in different formats = 15% each, including performances, visuals, note cards, self-evaluations, preparation, etc.)
Discussion portfolio 20% (2 evaluated discussions; Evaluations based on leadership, discussion participation, application of presentation skills, preparation)
Course work 20% (Peer feedback, active questioning, participation, etc.)
備考 Preparation is an important element for understanding media and mediated communication in modern society. A detailed syllabus (with a schedule for presentations) will be provided by the instructor at the first class meeting.
