授業の概要 This course will examine the role of media and their importance in modern society. The course will examine the global multimedia environment with the aim of becoming critical consumers and producers of culture. The course broadly defines “media” as including oral, print, photographic, broadcast, cinematic, and digital forms of cultural production. The course will examine the history of media, the role of media and media institutions, and the characteristics of mediated communication that help define the myths and beliefs of modern society.

準備学習 To understand media and the role of media in society, students must do the assigned readings before class and prepare for discussions each week. Readings and homework must be completed before class. Through lectures, discussions, readings, worksheets, story telling, research papers, and presentations, students will come to understand the role of media, their characteristics, and the impact of media on our global society. Expect to spend 2 to 3 hours working on this topic for every hour in class.

参考文献 Media texts from a variety of media sources (magazines, newspapers, films, television, internet, social) will also be used in this class. Students will be expected to pay attention to the media texts they encounter and report on these. Students will also be expected to create media texts for others.
成績評価方法・基準 Class work & quizzes: 40%
Projects & presentations: 20%
Research paper: 40% (Preparation work 20%; Final paper 20%)
