授業の目的、または到達目標 To understand the construction of images of Japan and the Japanese in American films.
授業の概要 This class explores the ways in which the present images of the Japanese have developed from the conventional stereotypes in the past in order to understand the intricate relationship between the images of the Japanese and the Americans themselves. The class will watch the films (outside the class), read the articles about them, and interpret the filmic images of the Japanese and Americans from WWⅡ to the present. We will examine their cultural contexts that create such images. While exploring these images, the class will seek to also improve reading, writing, discussion and presentation skills.

準備学習 Students are expected to watch the films below and read assigned materials (at least 5 pages in each class) to actively participate in discussions and presentations.

参考文献 Several films will be viewed out of class for this course. Portions of other films will also be recommended. Students will be expected to view these in their own time or at scheduled screenings. Films will include, among others, "Letters from Iwo Jima," "Flags of Our Fathers," "Why We Fight Series: Battle of China," "The Bridge on the River Kwai," "Pearl Harbor"

Wartime cartoons: "You're a sap, Mr. Jap" and "Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips"
成績評価方法・基準 Class Work: 40%, Group Research Presentation: 20%, Paper: 40% (Intro/Outline 5%, Draft 10%, Final 25%)
