授業の目的、または到達目標 To build upon the basics of both informal and formal debates covered in Debate I which included presenting and defending arguments, counter-arguments, rebuttal, and cross-examination techniques.
授業の概要 Students will continue to work on the skills needed for logically presenting and defending an opinion. Course work will begin with a review of the debate as a discussion technique. Students will discuss and debate topics of current interest. Following this, students will practice the skills of formal debate, including the necessity of examining both sides of an issue in order to adequately address the issues raised by those defending other positions. Students will participate in two formal debates, including cross-examination, during this part of the course.

準備学習 Students are expected to do all assigned readings and prepare for debates. A detailed syllabus will be provided at the first class meeting.

成績評価方法・基準 Class work 60%
Final Debate using the national forensic topic or one very similar (final debate, building cases, preparing the opponents’ case, evaluating debates and debating skills) 40%
Class work includes worksheets, homework, quizzes, news reports, etc.
