授業の目的、または到達目標 To learn the basics of both informal and formal debates including presenting and defending arguments, counter arguments, rebuttal, and cross-examination techniques.
授業の概要 Students will work on the skills needed for logically presenting and defending an opinion. Course work will begin with examination of the debate as discussion technique. Students will discuss and debate topics of current interest. Following this, students will learn the basic skills of formal debate including the necessity of examining both sides of an issue in order to adequately address the issues raised by those defending other positions. Students will participate in formal debates including cross-examination during this part of the course.

準備学習 Students are expected to do all assigned readings and prepare for debates. A detailed syllabus will be provided the first class meeting.

成績評価方法・基準 Class work (includes worksheets, homework, quizzes, news reports, etc.) 60%

Final Debate (includes preparation covering topics such as organizing, support, building cases, preparing for the opponent’s case, evaluating debates, and debating skills) 40%
