授業の目的、または到達目標 "To critcially consider the major social issues affecting the world and its people. Students will learn about the issues and how to look at them from a critical perspective.
Learning Goals:
* can develop an understanding of socio-political issues
* can learn to evaluate both sides of an issue
* can learn to recognize media bias
* can learn to recognize and limit cognitive bias
* can develop their ability to express their opinions
授業の概要 The course will look at major factors and trends that impact the world's people and how we can better understand and influence such issues. Some of topics include: Principles of human nature-the question of "good" and "evil"; Wealth and inequality-The gap between rich and poor around the world; The international system-Why some states become strong and others remain weak; The use of war and terror as political tools; The eco movement-The campaign for international environmental laws; Global health - Disease, GM food and medicine as big business; and others.

成績評価方法・基準 Class work = 50% (includes in-class work, homework, presentations, quizzes, discussions); Final Presentation = 10%; Reflection papers (2 or more) & Research Paper (5+ pages & references) [includes early stages (outline, introduction, preparation, first draft) = 40%
