授業の目的、または到達目標 What is intellectual property? It is property people create using their intellect or talent. It includes art, music, dance, movies, medicine, technology, and many other things.
Learning goals:
Understand the different categories of IP.
Understand the goals, national and international, of IP laws.
Analyze different types of IP - movies, music, inventions, etc.
授業の概要 We will begin with an introduction to the different categories of IP available in Japan, the U.S. and under international law. We will consider the benefits and costs of IP to both countries and individual people. We will consider how international treaties try to make IP laws fair to both rich and poor countries.

準備学習 The most important grading criteria are class attendance and participation in class discussions. In addition, quizzes may be given from time to time during the semester.
教科書 No textbook. Materials provided by professor. Most reading materials will be in English; however, Japanese laws and most international treaties will be available in Japanese. All students will need to have an A4-sized binder.
参考文献 A list of reference works and internet links will be provided at the beginning of the course.
成績評価方法・基準 Class participation and discussions-70%; quizzes-30%

備考 Please note there are 2 classes a week for the first 8 weeks. A more detailed syllabus will be provided at the beginning of the course.
