授業の目的、または到達目標 To understand the influence of scientific developments on our society
and to predict how technology may help shape our lives in the future.
Learning goals:
* can explain the impact of scientific developments
* can discuss the influence technology has on modern society
* can make predictions about the future trends of technology and its
uses
* can conduct research about the role of science and present and write
about this issue
授業の概要 In this course, students will read passages on rapidly developing modern technologies (nanotechnology, biotechnology, networking, artificial intelligence, etc.), discuss what influence scientific developments have had on our society, and attempt to predict how technology may help shape our future lives. Students will work on acquiring verbal and written communication skills to express their opinions effectively, making use of information obtained from assigned readings and other sources.

準備学習 Students will be required to read the assigned parts of the textbooks and supplementary material, and to get ready for quizzes and in-class discussion.

成績評価方法・基準 Class work – 60% (includes in-class work, homework, presentations, quizzes, discussions)
Reflection papers (2 or more) & Research Paper (3+ pages & references) – 40% [includes early stages (outline, introduction, preparation, first draft) & final paper; 2 or more reflection papers to develop understanding of the topic).
