科目名 Studies in English Interpreting in Business

授業の目的、または到達目標 This is a course for learning practical sides of actual interpreting scenes.
Learning goals:
Can understand what is the 'good interpreting service'
Can realize the level of language proficiency, knowledge and communication skills required of a good interpreter.
Can interpret speeches consecutively from English to Japanese, and from Japanese to English
Can interpret simple speeches simultaneously from E to J, with a speech text
授業の概要 While finding out the gap between the required level and their own level, various styles of training methods will be used to fill the gap; shadowing, retention, logical analysis, paraphrasing, speed reading and sight translation. For a certain subject matter of an interpreting job (for example, a marketing meeting of a manufacturer), students will learn how to research, prepare and practice for the job. Concurrently, students will try to improve their language proficiencies in Japanese and English. The course will include a field trip to a conference where professional interpreters are working.

準備学習 Students are advised to spend more time on review and practice at home than preparation. Each week there will be a sight translation homework.
教科書 Handouts will be distributed in class each week.
