授業の目的、または到達目標 To understand what makes a country safe and secure. To learn the real meaning of 'security'. To learn about the real dangers facing modern countries and what must be done to protect against them and make a country a truly safe place to live.

Learning Goals:
can explain the concept of international relations
can understand the major viewpoints within international relations
can describe the links between security, safety and well-being in modern states
can describe the important threats to the security of states
can describe and discuss the relationships between states
can understand how security affects these relationships
can better understand the problems that will face Japan in coming years
授業の概要 'Security' in international relations used to mean armies. Then it came to mean armies and a strong economy. Now it means much more; including protection from disease, a lack of crime, reducing environmental problems, dealing with population issues and finding new sources of energy. This course looks at what it really means for a country to be 'secure' and focuses especially on Japan.

準備学習 Students must read in advance assigned chapters and readings for each class as well as complete any homework reviewing or analyzing previous classes.
教科書 No textbook but during the course students will be required to read and write a critical review of a recent book about Japan's national security. They will be provided with a list of suitable titles to choose from.
参考文献 Reference materials will be internet sources and scanned articles made available from my Wilmina.
成績評価方法・基準 Class work and quizzes 40%, Book Review 15%, Research Essay 30%, Presentation 15%.
備考 Presentations and research papers must present new material beyond that contained within the course notes and assigned readings.
