授業の目的、または到達目標 このクラスは、討論などにおいて、学生が様々な側面からその問題を吟味し、説明・発表・弁護することを経験するという構成で展開される。個人的な意見や見解を討論していくことに付け加えて、社説や統計を利用し、それを用いる方法も取り入れていく。
This class is designed to give students experience in presenting, explaining, and defending different　sides of an issue or argument. In addition to arguing for personal opinions and perspectives, editorial　comment and analysis will be introduced and practiced.
授業の概要 学生は以下のスキルを学ぶ予定である：(a)英語による、論理的かつ客観的な側面から展開されている議論を理解・構成していく方法 (b)英語での議論において、自らの意見や視点を弁護する方法 (c)質問や反対議論に対する理解・そしてその応答方法 (d)自らの意見を分かりやすく、説得力をもって表現する方法
Students will learn the following skills: (a) how to recognize and construct logical, well-supported　arguments in English; (b) how to defend their opinions and viewpoints in English discussions; (c) how to　understand and answer questions and opposing arguments; and (d) how to express themselves clearly　and persuasively
授業の形態 学生は定期的にディベート、パネルディスカッション、そして質疑応答に参加する。使用言語においてフォーカスする点はディスカッションとディベート方法である：口頭表現方法を学ぶ補助教材としてテキストを使用する。クラス内での活動をビデオ撮りする予定である。
Students will participate regularly in dialogue debates, panel discussions, and Question-and-Answer　sessions. The focus of language use will be on oral discussion and debate; in some activities, written texts　will be created to support oral performance. Some activities will be videotaped.

準備学習 学生は一週間に３－４時間程度、リサーチや自らのスピーチや反論の準備・練習に時間を費やすことが求められる；定期的なリーディング課題とテキストからのジャーナル演習が毎週課題として出される
Students will be expected to spend 3-4 hours a week researching, preparing and practicing　their speeches and rebuttals; brief regular reading assignments and journal exercises from　the textbook will be assigned every week
