科目名 Comparative Culture Studies (4単位)
担当教員 MARCUS, William
授業の目的、または到達目標 This course varies from the 3 unit course in that it will also examine holiday customs of other countries and Japan as well in a comparative manner. Aside from this difference, the course objectives and content will be identical. This course seeks to understand how culture shapes our world at the local and global level. Notions of material and non-material culture will guide awareness of the genesis and reality of a variety of world cultures. Students' personal experiences and comparative analysis will foster class-wide interest and understanding of foreign cultures. Students will know and use the tools and vocabulary of cultural categorization to deepen their knowledge and respect for cultural diversity, including that of subcultures.
授業の概要 Cultural themes will be studied, including: verbal and non-verbal communication, family structures, gender relations, time-space notions, decision making processes and variations in interactions, among other themes. Cross-cultural communication will be examined to increase students' abilities to interact with citizens of other countries.
