科目名 Theme Studies I-A  Issues in Civil Liberties
担当教員 HAGERMAN, Craig
授業の目的、または到達目標 To learn about what rights and freedoms a person has, or should have, in a modern society. To understand the rational basis for these rights.
授業の概要 This class will introduce issues in civil liberties, civil rights, and freedoms and examine therights a citizen has in a modern democracy. Beginning with the historical and logical basis for development of individual rights, the course will then explore various topics such as discrimination against minorities (e.g. African Americans, Korean residents of Japan, etc.), legal rights, immigrant's rights, autonomy (e.g. gay marriage, abortion, euthanasia, etc), free speech, privacy and surveillance, and piracy (movies, music, and other cultural products). Finally we will consider the direction individual rights may take in the future. In this way the course will provide an understanding of why individual rights are granted and be able to compare freedoms in Japan with other countries.
