科目名 Topic Studies II - A  World Culture Studies

授業の目的、または到達目標 To increase awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures throughout the world.
授業の概要 This course is an examination of world cultures from a number of perspectives, including foods, communication styles, environmental influences on cultural development, and other topics. Also considered will be the issues of cultural diffusion (the movement of things and ideas from one culture to another), acculturation (when new traits replace traditional cultural patterns), and transculturation (when individuals move to a new culture and assimilate into the new culture). The course will look at how the forces at work within a society, contact between societies, and environmental change all contribute to the process of cultural change.

授業の形態 Students will discuss and otherwise respond to a wide variety of cultural groups as presented in selected readings, video clips, lectures, and other materials. The course will consist of lectures, discussions, quizzes, and presentations. A 5+ page research paper will be assigned.

成績評価方法・基準 Course work: 60% (includes required presentation-10%, quizzes, etc.); Research paper: 40% (Includes 5% for outline, preliminary work, introduction; 10% draft; 25% final paper)
