授業の目的、または到達目標 To study about Alice Walker and her work to examine the issues she addresses.
授業の概要 Alice Walker is one of the major contemporary African-American women writers. This course will focus on Alice Walker and her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Color Purple. Depicting the black woman’s struggle for independence, The Color Purple raised controversial issues, including racism and sexism. The life of Alice Walker will be studied first, and then The Color Purple will be read and analyzed.

準備学習 Preparation for class is required. Class Work: Students will be assigned to read about 30 pages per week and finish worksheets for discussion. Quizzes will be given to assess understanding of the assigned readings.Summary & Reflection Papers: Two papers that provide a summary of the readings and show the development of the student's thoughts about Alice Walker's life and writings are required. Students will be given further directions in class.

成績評価方法・基準 Class work & quizzes: 40% Group research presentation: 20% -- Required project Summary of Research: 10% -- Summary & references of Group research presentation
Reflection & response papers: 30% -- Two papers, at least 2 pages each
備考 Preparation is an important. A detailed syllabus will be provided at the first class meeting.
