授業の目的、または到達目標 To explore concepts of Japanese language， people， and culture from a new perspective， which will be examined in order to identify ways in which these concepts may impact intercultural communication.
授業の概要 Inefficient communication can be both mentally and physically stressful to participants. This natural tension is increased in bilingual situations， such as when Japanese communicate with English speakers. This course will examine aspects of the Japanese language， people， and culture including high-context language use， collectivism， and harmony by analyzing natural conversation data. This analysis will enable students to identify how to avoid stress when communicating in English and improve efficiency in intercultural communication.

準備学習 Class Work:
Students will be assigned to read about 20 pages per week as well as writing a short response to what they read. A group of students will be also required to give presentations on reading assignments.
Research Paper:
Students must submit a 5-page research paper. The paper should be data-based original research and students are expected to read journal articles related to their paper topic. They will be also required to give presentations on their papers.
