科目名 Supervised Reading & Research II-1  Life and Death in Modern Society

授業の目的、または到達目標 To Explore the problem of an apparent lack of cultural consensus over how endings from life (or dying) should be directed.
授業の概要 This course if designed to help students become more adept at discussing public conrversies such as euthanasia and physician assisted suicide. Students should come away from this course with a recognition of the importance of language when describing pain, fear, ore hopelessness and with their own frameworks for evaluating some of the moral and social issues in contemporary medical practice. In this course, we will read stories of the final chapter of life as the basis for examining universal concerns of health, illness, and the quality of life. We will also consider these questions of why, where, when, and how do people die, how much control do we have over our own death, and how can we measure the quality of life.

準備学習 Read the assigned chapters or articles (about 20 pages per week) before each class, and be ready to answer about the readings in class. Each student will complete a research paper project.
