科目名 Computer-Assisted Composition

授業の目的、または到達目標 Students will use various rhetorical patterns, explore individual writing styles, and reach an understanding of using computers as a tool for both research and writing.

授業の概要 1. Students will be expected to practice composition, editing, and evaluation of their own and other students’ writing. Students will explore writing styles, from set rhetorical patterns to free writing and research writing. One aspect of this will be the need to conduct research and analyze information found from a critical perspective. Students will also be expected to expand on skills covered in Research Methods.
2. The computer will be one of the tools used in the composition process, but this is not a class in how to use a computer. Students must have basic computer skills before enrolling.

  • Introduction to course requirements, basic computer use, and e-mail. Techniques for using word processing software efficiently.

  • Explanation of expository writing, sending e-mail attachments, and begin working on first essay.  
  • Send test e-mail attachment.

  • Review essay form. Continue work on first essay. Explanation of how Criterion will be used for essay writing.  
  • Put rough draft on Criterion.

  • Rough draft of first essay due on Criterion. Explain Criterion reports. Explain APA formatting and requirements.

  • Clarification and review of types of expository writing.

  • Review formatting, revision techniques, and computer word processing techniques.   
  • Prepare to hand in final draft of first essay.

  • Final draft of first essay due. Choose topic and organizational pattern for the Internet essay. Review thesis statement and References page construction.

  • Introduction to Internet use including finding sources and other Internet activities.

  • Do in-class timed writing on Criterion. Continue Internet activities.  
  • Put rough draft on Criterion.

  • Continue work on Internet essay. Put rough draft of Internet essay on Criterion

  • Techniques selecting graphics for presentations and using presentation software.

  • Continue work on and revision of the Internet essay.

  • Course review. Turn in portfolio of all work including final draft of Internet essay. In-class final examination.

準備学習 Students should plan to use the CALL labs outside of class time to review computer techniques and do Internet searches.

教科書 Some handouts will be provided by the instructor. Some others may be picked up at the Writing Center in SASSC room.

参考文献 Students are encouraged to read the CALL orientation material concerning the use of the computers and software programs, especially for word processing programs and Criterion
