授業の目的、または到達目標 The aim is to explore the central themes of human rights in modern times.


授業の概要 When you hear the term ‘human rights’, which topics flashed across your mind? In this course we read a story of a young boy’s journey from a refugee camp in Sudan to Chicago. How did he overcome racial prejudice, language barriers and financial disadvantage? How did he realize his dream of a full-tuition scholarship to Harvard University?

準備学習 Class Work: Students will be asked to read about 20 pages per week and complete worksheet(s) provided. They will do a quiz to assess their understanding of the assigned readings in every class. This will be collected and graded. Regular attendance is required and expected. Students who miss a class are responsible for finding out what work was done and what homework is due.
Research Paper: To successfully complete the course, all students must submit a 5-page research paper. The research paper is completed in three stages: the introduction/outline and works cited; the rough draft; and the final draft. If students do not submit the paper, they cannot pass the course.

成績評価方法・基準 Class work (attendance, class participation, quizzes, assignments, presentation) 30%
Research Paper Work: 40%

In Class Final Exam 30%
* Late assignments will be penalized (minus 5% per day).
