担当教員 Sponseller, Aaron C.
授業の目的、または到達目標 To develop a keen awareness of issues related to displacement through film and literature, with particular emphasis on displacement within Japan and in Japanese diaspora.
Learning Goals:
*Can identify several major international instances of displacement from the 20th century to the present
*Can describe major causes for displacement abroad
*Can articulate aspects of society that foster a sense of displacement among minority populations
*Can discuss displacement domestically and internationally as it relates to modern Japan
授業の概要 This course will examine film and literature focused on displacement from the early-mid 20th century to the present day. Students will develop an understanding of the causes of displacement abroad, as well as the notion that displacement domestically is commonplace. Course materials will include films (fiction and documentary) and literature (novels and short stories) from all around the world. Students should develop a deep appreciation for how these issues relate to Japan and Japanese diaspora through materials focused on Japanese-American internment during WWII, the burakumin, and the lives of Japanese of mixed-race in modern Japan.
