担当教員 | Takahashi, Saul 高橋 宗瑠 |
授業の目的、または到達目標 |
Upon completing this course, students should be able to: Explain some of the main modern manifestations of Islamophobia; Use the prism of international human rights in analysing those manifestations; and Explain the historical context of Islamophobia. |
授業の概要 |
Muslims have become the international boogeyman: violent terrorists, oppressors of women, threats to Western civilisation.. This course will use the international human rights prism in examining the contemporary manifestations of anti Muslim racism, i.e. Islamophobia. The course will also use reading material in areas such as post colonial studies, to understand the historical context of Islamophobia and its connection with modernity itself. It is highly recommended that students wishing to take this course: 1) are already familiar with international human rights standards pertaining to freedom of religion and racial discrimination; and 2) read Said's 'Orientalism' before taking the course. However, neither of these are prerequisites. |
