授業の目的、または到達目標 春学期：英語で読むことになれた後、論理的文献を、日本語に訳すことなく、多量に、効率良く、正確に読みこなす力をつける。
授業の概要 学術文献を読む準備として、論理的に書かれたパラグラフまたエッセイの基本構成を理解し、資料を正確かつ批判的に読む力をつける。Core Studies I (Writing)とCore Studies III (Discussion) と共通のトピック（平和の追求、科学と宗教）に関する様々な文献を読み、トピックに関連する知識を深め、英語ではなしたり書いたりするための情報を得る。
授業の形態 予習を前提にして、資料を読み、理解を確認し、トピックについてデイスカッションを行う。

準備学習 スケジュールでしめされた教材の予習を行う。共通教材にはエッセイを朗読した録音があるので予習に利用する。文の構成については「日本語説明」冊子を参照すること。英英辞書で単語を調べる。
