授業の目的、または到達目標 To understand what second language acquisition (SLA) is and factors influencing SLA, and for learners to use this knowledge to reflect on their own learning.

Learning Goals:
* can use necessary terms when discussing SLA
* can define SLA, and explain different SLA theories
* can describe, explain and evaluate different SLA influencing factors
* can use my knowledge of SLA to reflect on past learning, and to best develop my future English language ability
授業の概要 This course will define and examine SLA, and a range of factors influencing SLA. The course will equip learners with the terms necessary to take part in discussions of SLA. This course will examine different theories of SLA. Finally, learners will evaluate the effectiveness of past learning experiences, and consider how to best develop their English language ability in the future.

準備学習 To understand what SLA is and factors influencing SLA, and for learners to use this knowledge to reflect on their own learning, students must complete the assigned readings before class, and prepare for weekly discussions and quizzes. Readings and homework must be completed before class. Reflection modules have to be completed along with the readings. Expect to spend 2 to 3 hours working on this topic for every hour in class.

成績評価方法・基準 Evaluation is based on course work, participation, and papers: Class work & quizzes = 40% (includes in-class work, homework, presentations, quizzes, discussions); Group research presentation = 20% & written summary & reflection of research = 10%; Reflection & response papers = 30% (4 or more, see information about each of the courses).
