To understand how our own experiences and beliefs shape the way we interact with people, to develop expertise in communicating across cultures, and to gain knowledge of intercultural communication skills. We will examine identity, language, nonverbal codes and other factors that affect communication. Learning Goals Can identify some gestures and their different meanings in different countries Can identify your our stereotypes Can understand how individuals are different in their views of the world and values Can explain the concept of the cultural iceberg Can explain high/low context Can give examples of Describe, Interpret and Evaluate Can give a presentation on an aspect of culture Can explain hidden culture Can write a reflective paper linking the cultural ideas learned in class to their world |
授業の概要 |
What is culture? How does it influence how we interact with people? Why do people from different backgrounds often misunderstand each other? How can we develop better communication skills? These are a few of the questions that we will discuss in this course. We will examine the field of intercultural communication and begin to develop skills to help us become better intercultural communicators. |
授業の形態 |
This course involves readings, discussions, student presentations and role plays. To understand intercultural communication we all must be actively involved in the classes. |
