授業の目的、または到達目標 Reporting and news writing is a skills-based course. Students will learn the basics of journalism and its two main components-reporting and writing of the news. They will explore how news is delivered today through multiple platforms, including mobile devices, TV, radio, Web and printed publications.
授業の概要 At the successful conclusion of the course, students will
* demonstrate knowledge and professional proficiency in the
fundamentals of journalism
* demonstrate basic news writing skills in English
* employ basic reporting techniques (good interviewing skills and the
ability to find news)
* create stories in English for print, web, broadcast, and mobile devices.

準備学習 There will be regular writing assignments and English grammar work to be done outside of class. These will build the class goals of improving English through learning reporting and news writing skills. In addition, students must prepare for class by watching and reading the news every day.
教科書 Students must read the news every day, focusing on the Japanese news sections (e.g., The Japan Times, The Japan News). They should regularly watch broadcast news reports on TV or online. Other readings will be provided by the instructor.
参考文献 You will need a good dictionary (digital or paper).
成績評価方法・基準 News Quizzes: 20%
In-class stories & grammar exercises: 20%
Reporting & news writing assignments: 40%
Class participation (active work with others, editing, production work): 20%
