授業の目的、または到達目標 To introduce students to major works of Western art and their impact on society.
Learning goals:
* Can identify major works of art.
* Can describe the way art reflects the culture of its time.
* Can analyze a work of art with reference to its visual properties and cultural references.
* Can apply learning from class to present an evaluation of selected works of contemporary art.
授業の概要 In this course students will look at major works of Western art such as the David, the Mona Lisa, and Guernica. They will practice the language necessary to talk about the visual qualities of the art, and the thinking necessary to understand how each work of art reflected the culture of its times. The class will also look at how art has changed cultural norms over time. At the end of the course students will use these skills to evaluate the effectiveness of contemporary art in expressing the cultural norms of our time.

準備学習 Students will examine each painting before class and write a reflection on the piece in their learning journal.

成績評価方法・基準 Evaluation is based on course work, participation, and papers:

Class work & quizzes (includes in-class work, 

homework, presentations, quizzes, discussions): 40%
Research presentation & written summary &

reflection of research:
Research presentation 20%
Written summary & reflection of research: 10%
Papers: 30%

Papers: Reflection & response papers or short research papers.
Four or more papers of at least 1 page each. These can be reflection or research. They all must have citations written up using APA style. All must follow the layout for papers given in the OJU iBook "Writing in English: A Guide.
