科目名 Topic Studies 1  Introduction to Japanese Literature

授業の目的、または到達目標 The aim of this class it to examine modern Japanese literature(in English), particularly with a focus on women's literary voices.

Learning Goals:

* can form one's own view by interpreting, analyzing, and criticizing the author's view.

* can respond to, discuss, and evaluate literary texts in English based on topic specified discussion.

* can demonstrate comprehension of reading literary texts through a variety of responses.
授業の概要 This course will examine Japanese literature from the end of nineteenth century until the present in English translation. By reading modern short stories written by various authors, students will become aware of the development and different literary approaches of Japanese writers from Meiji to Heisei period. In particular, the course aims to provide students with sensitivity in the aspects of women’s literary voices through a close analysis of how each text expresses and reflects historical/cultural background.

成績評価方法・基準 Evaluation is based on course work, participation, and papers: Class work & quizzes = 40% (includes in-class work, homework, presentations, quizzes, discussions); Group research presentation = 20% & written summary & reflection of research = 10%; Reflection & response papers = 30% (4 or more, see information about each of the courses).
