科目名 Theme Studies I  Racial Discrimination
担当教員 竹澤 由記子
授業の目的、または到達目標 Objectives: To understand issues relating to racial prejudice and our responsibility for fighting against this phenomenon to eliminate institutional racism from our society.
*can have a clear understanding that racial prejudice is scientifically wrong
*can discuss issues of racial discrimination in the U.S.and South Africa
*can research a topic relating to racial discrimination from history or from the present day
授業の概要 In this course, students will read textbooks, discuss and write papers on the issues regarding racial
discrimination. First, we will examine the widespread but false concept of“race” from a critical point of view. Then, we will learn how institutionalized racism plagued the societies of South Africa and the U.S. from the writings on Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. By reading the biographies of the two great leaders who fought against apartheid in South Africa and the "American apartheid" in the U.S., we can get the idea how cruel the institutionalized racism was and how persistently people struggled against it. The deep insight of the two leaders is still inspiring, because regretfully racism still prevails all over the world, and the struggle to eliminate it is not completed yet. It is our responsibility to get rid of racism from our own mind and to fight against the phenomenon and institutions of racial discrimination in the society we belong to.
