授業の目的、または到達目標 To understand how traditions are created and popularized and recognize how popular traditions are, in reality, created through a combination of universal archetypes, migrating cultures, inspired beliefs, and business judgments.

Learning Goals:

*can understand the process of creating traditions
*can explain the origins of popular traditions in Japan
*can explain the relationship between traditions and commerce
*can create unique traditions with relevant symbols and narratives
授業の概要 This course will examine holidays, beginning with their mythological inceptions, to their accepted religious framing and their popular cultural expression in Western countries as well as Japan. Issues of migration, diffusion, and cultural borrowing as they impact on the changes in "tradition" will be considered. The role of business in furthering and popularizing modern traditions will be considered.

準備学習 Students are expected to read course readings several hours a week and to prepare short response papers for subsequent class discussions. Students will also be responsible for reviewing course content for occasional quizzes. Students will also research a cultural theme, either individually or as a group, and prepare a report and presentation.
