授業の目的、または到達目標 To nurture cross-cultural and inter-cultural awareness through the study of American films and consider how films provide both a dramatic view of American society while also revealing its cultural assumptions.
Learning Goals:
* can demonstrate an understanding of the paralinguistic signals in film sequences
* can discuss the cultural and linguistic content included in the sequences
* can explain relevant aspects of the communicative situations in film sequences
* can show understanding of how images and sounds enhance the communicative messages in film sequences
授業の概要 This course provides an introduction to film studies by extracting suitable sequences and presenting a variety of scenes and communicative situations through American films, both with and without English subtitles. Through these, the class will examine the sociolinguistic, psychological, and cross-cultural aspects in these sequences and use these to discuss the paralinguistic signals and cultural nuances in American films.

準備学習 Prepare for the discussions of the topics. Interest in the themes of the film is required. Reference books and related DVDs will be introduced in class.
教科書 Readings and learning material will be provided by the instructor.
参考文献 To be informed.
成績評価方法・基準 Class/Other Work – 40% Class work includes items such as discussions, presentations, class participation, quizzes, etc. These items may be weighted according to the course requirements; however, emphasis should be placed on discussions and presentations.

Research Presentation – 20% Students must make at least one presentation that is based on research. Note: Presentations should be completed before the last week of classes in order to allow for make-up presentations if needed.

Written Summary and Reflection of Research with References – 10% This summary should be done individually about their Presentation. It must include the references used for their research presentation.

Reflection & Response papers or Short Research Paper – 30% These should be more than just a summary. Students need to learn how to read, summarize, reflect on the author’s ideas, and respond to the ideas in the readings.
