授業の目的、または到達目標 To develop a deeper understanding of cultural differences in general, with emphasis on the Trance-Pacific context and the Japanese culture in particular.
Learning goals:
・can understand descriptions on various aspects of Japanese culture and society
・can discuss customs, manners and societal issues from cross-cultural perspective
・can learn to explain more in-depth structure of Japanese culture
授業の概要 This course aims to explore intercultural issues and cultural theory in the contemporary context of globalization by taking interdisciplinary approach from the social sciences, particularly cultural anthropology. It hopes to provide students with an appreciation for the diversity of the human experience, especially in the Japanese－American / Canadian / Australian comparative context. Students will gain an overview of unique Japanese lifestyles, customs, values and practices with a focus on recent societal trends in Japan from an internationally common cognitive framework with an eye to comparisons with those in other cultures.
授業の形態 Students will be expected to do the readings and homework before each class. They will participate in discussions and many intercultural activities. There will also be quizzes and individual and group presentations.
