授業の目的、または到達目標 To learn about what rights and freedoms a person has, to be able to give reasons for why people should have rights and what can be done to protect them.
At the end of the course, students:
* can understand why people have rights and freedoms in a democracy
* can compare rights in modern democracies
* can explain civil rights issues in detail
* can give rational opinions on various rights issues
授業の概要 This class will introduce students to issues in civil liberties. Students will learn about what kind of rights a citizen has in a modern democracy. Students will learn about the history of individual rights and about issues that are important in today's world. In this class students will have opportunities to select topics to focus upon. These can include: discrimination against minorities, personal autonomy issues, freedom of expression, propaganda and others.

授業の形態 In this course students will be expected to read assigned materials and prepare for discussions. They will select a topic of interest and gather more information to share with classmates and later write a short paper focusing on that issue. A final presentation is required at the end of the course.

準備学習 Students are expected complete reading and other assignments provided by the instructor. They must participate in discussions in class, and also search for information to share with their classmates. Each student will focus on one topic of interest to do further research and then write a short paper on it. Final presentations will be given towards the end of the course.
教科書 No text. Readings will be provided.
成績評価方法・基準 Homework and classwork = 50%
Short research paper = 40%
Final presentation = 10%
