科目名 Topic Studies 2  Traditions and Popular Expressions

授業の目的、または到達目標 To understand how traditions are created and popularized and recognize how popular traditions are, in reality, created through a combination of universal archetypes, migrating cultures, inspired beliefs, and business judgments.
Learning goals:
*can understand the historical source, Christian influence and popular/business expression of Western holidays
*can compare and explain the differences between Western and Japanese representations of holidays
*can highlight the ongoing debate between traditional and popular/business expression of holidays
*can share their research into holidays and explain their historical and popular culture aspects
授業の概要 This course will examine holidays, beginning with their mythological inceptions, to their accepted religious framing and their popular cultural expression in Western countries as well as Japan. Issues of migration, diffusion, and cultural borrowing as they impact on the changes in "tradition" will be considered. The role of business in furthering and popularizing modern traditions will be considered.

成績評価方法・基準 1.Class work – 60% (includes in-class work, homework, presentations, quizzes, discussions)
2.Reflection papers (2 or more) & Research Paper (3+ pages & references) – 40% [includes early stages (outline, introduction, preparation, first draft) & final paper; 2 or more reflection papers to develop understanding of the topic).

備考 1. Two-page Summary of Research Presentation & References should be submitted individually by each student on the presentation day.
2. Submission of the reflection papers (of at least 2 pages in total) and 2-page summary of presentation along with a references page is required for the students to pass the course.
