授業の目的、または到達目標 To improve students’ overall academic writing skills for courses during their second year, for courses in their specialization areas in the 3rd and 4th years, and for their graduation project thesis.
<Learning Goals>
:
*Identify the different parts of a research paper
*Write citations correctly both in the text of the paper and in the reference page
*Summarize and create graphs, figures and tables
*Write summaries of research and be able to use quotes, summaries, and paraphrases appropriately in a research paper
*Find information on the internet and determine its veracity, and take notes (from books, journals, newspapers, internet, etc.)
*Argue a point including appropriate supporting details
*Write clear, easy to understand academic English
*Use Criterion to help evaluate their own writing
授業の概要 This course builds upon writing skills developed in 1st year courses. This course particularly aims to improve student’s skills at analyzing data and writing to support their own arguments. In addition, the process of writing will continue to be emphasized. Students will correct their own writing, including organization, details, grammar, structure of overall writing, and style.

準備学習 Students should spend at least one hour on homework for each hour in class. They are expected to bring prepared summaries, paraphrases, outlines, and any other assignments assigned by the teachers to class.

成績評価方法・基準 CLASS WORK HOME WORK---70%
Includes homework, quizzes, and in class work consisting of: note taking, outlining, finding and evaluating sources, practicing quoting, summarizing, and paraphrasing, writing citations and references, working with tables and figures, formatting papers correctly, reviewing grammar and word usage, working with Criterion, and doing timed writing. Part of this work will involve working with essays (probably two) though turning in final essays to be evaluated separately is not necessarily part of this work.

RESEARCH PAPER---30%
A 3-5 page research paper including if possible at least one table, and one figure. The grade will be based on the entire research process as studied in the Research Skills Work listed above including finding and evaluating sources, note taking, outlining, and properly using in-text citations and references in the reference page.

Feedback on most Homework, Writing, and Reflections will be written comments.
Feedback on Classwork will be oral comments given face-to-face.
