授業の目的、または到達目標 Students will learn to read and write effectively, focusing on rhetorical patterns, related to global issue topics. They will practice basic research in collecting, organizing and presenting information about these topics in written form. The rhetorical patterns include illustration, process, comparison and contrast, cause and effect, and persuasion.
授業の概要 Students can read English texts on global issues with appropriate speed, comprehension, and awareness of rhetorical patterns and text structures
Students can write a paragraphs and essays in the illustration, process, comparison and contrast, cause and effect, and persuasion forms of global issues
Students can write short research papers in an appropriate style, properly citing sources

授業の形態 The course will be team taught (Students will meet with each teacher (J & E) once a week; All skills will be covered in both teacher’s classes with the Japanese teacher taking the lead on reading and the non-Japanese teacher taking the lead on writing)

教科書 There is not a commercial textbook for the reading component in spring semester; texts have been written or compiled from OJC material with additional texts available in the IRW moodle.
The writing component will use the following textbook for the entire year (both spring and fall semesters):
