授業の目的、または到達目標 To increase awareness of the changes and developments in the Pacific Basin (Asia) over the last 150 years concentrating on gender and its effect upon women in Asia and Japan.
授業の概要 While looking at historical events that have shaped the Pacific Century (the late 1800s to the present in Asia), the course will draw connections to the current situation of women in Asia and Japan. Topics will include China’s decline as a regional power in the late 1800s; Japan’s changes during the Meiji era after Perry’s visit; the different effects nationalism had on Indonesia and Vietnam; Korea’s development after the war; Confucian influences on the economies of Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea.

準備学習 To prepare for class discussions students will complete worksheets and news summaries. These will provide background information on the countries and issues crucial to the Pacific Century. Students may also prepare a joint presentation (poster session) on one of the countries in the region and will prepare a short presentation on their paper topic as their final project.

成績評価方法・基準 Classwork and quizzes-50%; Final presentation-10%; 5-page or more research paper-40% (outline-5%; first draft-10%, final draft-25%)
