授業の目的、または到達目標 To explore the fascinating world we live in, in order to appreciate global diversity.
Learning goals:
* can use a variety of reading skills to understand texts on a range of topics * can use critical thinking skills and participate in discussion
* can use listening skills to comprehend audio/visual material
* can demonstrate writing skills by doing summaries and reflection & response paragraphs and writing a research paper.
* can use high-frequency vocabulary both passively in listening and reading tasks as well as actively in spoken and written form.
授業の概要 Students will use stimulating National Geographic text, images and video covering a wide range of real-world topics including culture, science, social issues will engage students in meaningful communicative activities.
Students will read texts, watch topic related videos and participate in group and class discussion. They will write summaries and reflection & response paragraphs to demonstrate understanding and critical thinking.

準備学習 A reading assignment will be given for homework to enable students to participate actively in group discussions. Students will also conduct research, write a five-page academic paper and make a presentation on their findings.

成績評価方法・基準 Class work 50% (class participation, homework).
Research Paper 40% (Outline 5%, Rough Draft 10%, Final Draft 25%),
Final Presentation 10%
